Metal Versus Paper Coffee Filters

· June 22, 2026

The filter you choose changes the coffee more than most people expect. Paper strips away oils and fines for a clean cup, while metal lets them through for a heavier, richer brew.

Paper filters absorb coffee oils and trap the finest particles, producing a bright, sediment-free cup with crisp clarity. Metal filters let the natural oils and some sediment into the cup, adding body and mouthfeel.

Metal filters are reusable and produce zero waste, a big plus for daily brewers who hate throwing away paper every morning. Paper filters are disposable but easier to clean up and more consistent.

The health angle appears in every discussion. Paper filters remove some of the oils that raise cholesterol, a genuine consideration for daily heavy drinkers, while metal filters retain them.

Taste is the deciding factor for most people. Clean and bright points to paper, rich and full points to metal, and there is no wrong answer between them.

For a clean, delicate pour-over, choose paper. For a fuller, oilier cup closer to a French press, choose metal and enjoy the texture.
